The Government Should Support Wind Energy - 994 Words

Many researchers argue that the government should support wind energy. The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) argues that wind energy reduces pollution. A 2009 UCS analysis found that they could reduce pollution by lowering power plant carbon dioxide emissions. A 25 percent national renewable electricity standard would lower power plant carbon dioxide emissions 277 million metric tons annually by 2025 (para. 4). A study by the United States Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory explored reducing pollution by generating 80 percent of the country’s electricity production could be reduced by approximately 81 percent by 2050. Wind power can reduce pollution generated by fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. A typical 750 kW wind turbine provides enough power for 328 typical (non-electric heating) homes. Electricity production accounts for more than one-third of U.S. global warming emissions, with the majority generated by coal-fired power pla nts, which produce approximately 25 percent of total U.S. global warming emissions; natural gas-fired power plants produce 6 percent of total emissions. In contrast, global warming emissions associated with renewable energy are minimal, according to data gathered by the International Panel on Climate Change. â€Å"Wind emits only 0.02 to 0.04 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour (CO2E/kWh).
